A Journey That Began with a Book: Carrara, Marble, and the Magic of Literary Travel

Some journeys begin with a plane ticket. Others begin with a page. For me, this journey began with *The View from Lake Como* by Adriana Trigiani. The moment I finished the book, I felt drawn, almost sent directly to the marble quarries of Carrara. Has a story ever planted a place so deeply in your imagination that you simply knew you had to see it for yourself? I knew Carrara was one of those places for me. Il Bottaccio: Where Art Meets Hospitality Last week, I had the good fortune of visiting Il Bottaccio, a charming Relais & Châteaux property in the town of Montignoso, just next to Carrara. With only eight rooms, it feels wonderfully intimate — less like a hotel and more like a private artistic retreat. Every room is its own masterpiece, with marble details and beautiful art, and the property is surrounded by a gorgeous garden that invites you to slow down and breathe. From the moment we arrived, the staff made the experience feel personal, thoughtful, and unforgettable. Irina's warmth and knowledge instantly put us at ease. Nino, whose talents span general manager, chef, artist, and musician, shared stories, taught us about the marble and local cuisine, and even performed for the restaurant — moments that made the stay feel deeply personal. Marco, our dinner waiter, and Lorenzo, a young sommelier in training, brought smiles, professionalism, and genuine enthusiasm that reflected the heart of Il Bottaccio. Mountains of White: The Marble Quarries Leaving the train station, we could already see the white marble-tipped mountains that, if you didn't know better, you would think were covered in snow. The sight was breathtaking. On our second day, we visited the marble quarries. We climbed the winding roads of the Apuan Alps, watched the landscape transform from green hills to brilliant white mountains, and stepped into an open-air quarry with hard hats and vests for safety. Everywhere you looked, the mountain shone with pure whiteness, so bright that sunglasses were essential. We even explored a quarry cavern, with towering vertical walls, veins running dramatically through the stone, and enormous blocks ready for transport. A Taste of Tradition: Lardo di Colonnata Afterward, we went to lunch at the Lard Rock Café (yes, it's real) in the tiny mountain village of Colonnata, just above the quarries. Colonnata is famous for its Lardo di Colonnata, a delicacy made from pork fat rubbed with herbs, placed in marble basins carved from Carrara marble, and left to cure for six months or more. Sliced paper-thin, it melts in your mouth with a delicate herbal flavor. The Power of Literary Travel This journey reminded me why literary travel is so powerful. Books can spark curiosity and imagination, leading you to experiences that blend history, art, culture, and human connection. At Il Bottaccio, every detail — the rooms, the gardens, the hospitality, the culinary magic, and even the music — made the experience feel like a family welcoming you into a world few travelers get to see. Has a book ever inspired one of your travels? I'd love to hear about it.
